The EMI Mobile Messenger (EMM) is a tool for SAP R/3 developed on SAP Netweaver™ to quickly build any SMS Application imaginable. It allows customers to easily send and receive SMS into and from SAP R/3 to interface with SAP functions: from txt-banking to txt-promotions and beyond.

EMM was built for all the SAP R/3 enabled enterprise that requires scalability, reliability, integration and extensibility. It is developed to provide a low cost, flexible SMS sending and receiving tool specifically for SAP R/3. This was primarily to avoid the need for expensive and complex middleware messaging applications and secondarily to reduce the amount of programming involved in interface development. EMM has functionality to automatically detect and process SMS messages, monitor and manage SMS messages and provides an effective framework to process business transactions.

The concept is clear and is relatively simple in functionality:

Outbound SMS from SAP R/3
  1. A transaction triggers a user exit or an event triggers an ABAP program
  2. The message processing is initiated by EMM SMS processing module:
    • Conditional and formatting rules are applied to assign data from the input data source to new output data structure meant for sending as SMS.
    • Transferring of the details to the SMS engine.
Inbound SMS into SAP R/3
  1. EMM SMS engine module receives the message from external sources. Message will be sent to EMM SMS processing module via RFC communications.
  2. A nominated business transaction is initiated to process the new inbound sms via and ABAP Program using BAPIs or BDCS, etc
